Why do you need a next-generation firewall today?
Secure My Data
Back in the days, securing the IT environment of your organisation used to be a fairly simple activity. Traditional firewalls were able to block ports, apply routing rules to packets and fend off simple attacks. In the current IT security environment, however, businesses are using thousands of applications from a variety of devices. The simplistic approach of traditional firewalls towards security is no longer enough.
The ever-evolving cybercrime environment
As a response to the flaws of the traditional firewall, companies started scaling up their security with a number of additional security solutions. This approach, however, caused some troubles as the separate solutions were not sufficiently able to communicate among each other. The lack of integration left weak spots in organisation’s defenses. The market reacted to these pitfalls by introducing so-called unified threat management solutions (UTMs). UTMs have an integrated approach towards security and generally include functionalities such as anti-virus, anti-spyware, anti-spam and firewalls. These solutions, however, lacked specialisation, leaving organisations unprotected against the more sophisticated cyberattacks.
A future-proof security strategy
Past security solutions have shown to have a limited lifespan. Therefore, businesses should obtain a more forward-looking approach to IT security. Next-generation firewalls (NGFWs) can offer a significant contribution to making IT securities future-proof. For example, NGFWs have integrated security layers that are able to exchange data with different functions. As developments such as increased mobility and cloud computing are expanding the attack surface area, communication between different security layers help identify attacks that slip through security gaps. Besides, the integrated, multi-layered approach towards security eliminates the complexity and cost of purchasing and managing multiple solutions.
NGFWs also have the capability to provide actionable indications of compromise. These are “tags” on a host that indicate that the network might be infected. This capability enables faster identification, containment and remediation. The contextual awareness that NGFWs provide gives a holistic view of what is happening on the network, including information about users, devices, communication between virtual machines, threats, vulnerabilities, applications, website accesses and file transfers.
Furthermore, NGFWs are scalable and therefore deliver optimal performance, even when multiple security functions are enabled simultaneously. Scalability also enables you to meet your requirements in terms of capacity, both today and in the future.
